SONDRIO and VALMALENCO

Sondrio: Capital of Valtellina

Sondrio, the capital of the province of the same name, is an Alpine city located in the heart of Valtellina, at the confluence of the Mallero River and the Adda River. Its strategic location has made it an important center of trade and cultural exchange between Italy and Central Europe, crossing the Alpine passes, since ancient times.

The city is a vibrant administrative and economic hub, yet retains a historic charm evident in its old town. Here, you can admire Masegra Castle, an imposing fortress overlooking the city, and the Collegiate Church of Saints Gervasius and Protasius, with its majestic façade. The streets of the old town, lined with porticoes and noble palaces, invite pleasant strolls, while the numerous shops, bars, and restaurants offer a complete experience.

Sondrio is also an excellent starting point for exploring the natural beauty of Valtellina, from the terraced vineyards that produce renowned D.O.C. and D.O.C.G., to the majestic mountains that surround it.

Valmalenco: A Natural Paradise a Stone's Throw from Sondrio

A few kilometers north of Sondrio lies Valmalenco, an enchanting Alpine valley of extraordinary beauty. Framed by the imposing peaks of the Bernina Range, including Pizzo Scalino and Pizzo Malenco, Valmalenco is a true paradise for lovers of the mountains and pristine nature.

Characterized by breathtaking landscapes, with vast larch and fir forests, alpine pastures, crystal-clear lakes, and rushing streams, Valmalenco offers endless opportunities for hiking, trekking, climbing, and ski mountaineering. In winter, it is a renowned ski resort, thanks to the ski lifts that connect the villages of Chiesa in Valmalenco and Caspoggio, offering slopes for all levels.

Valmalenco is also famous for its serpentine quarries, a dark green rock used for construction and ornamental purposes, and for the presence of rare minerals that attract enthusiasts from around the world. Its wild nature and Alpine traditions make it a unique and authentic place.
